WHY WE ARE RUNNING

Cancer and heart disease are bigger killers, but Alzheimer’s is the most expensive malady in the U.S., costing families and society $157 billion to $215 billion a year, according to a new study that looked at this in unprecedented detail.

The biggest cost of Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia isn’t drugs or other medical treatments, but the care that’s needed just to get mentally impaired people through daily life, the nonprofit RAND Corp.’s study found.

Dementia’s direct costs, from medicines to nursing homes, are $109 billion a year in 2010 dollars, the new RAND report found. That compares to $102 billion for heart disease and $77 billion for cancer. Informal care by family members and others pushes dementia’s total even higher, depending on how that care and lost wages are valued…

 Runners: AN INCREDIBLE DAY

News

RACE DAY 2012

Watching the weather forecast all week had me very concerned. As the weekend approached, the forecast was less than favorable for outdoor activity. Flood warnings were posted with heavy rains for the weekend. Not a weekend to be outdoors.

I remember one year running in a torrential downpour for 13.1 miles. It was not fun! When you finish running 13.1 miles and feel cold, you know that's not good! I did not want TeamA to have to experience that.

Saturday was indeed a washout and calling for more on Sunday…

 Jane's Journal: CELEBRATING OUR MOMS

News

Today is a day to celebrate our mothers. Hopefully, you will have the opportunity to spend time with your mother today. If not, please reflect on everything your mother has done through her loving and caring to raise you to become the person you are today.

My Mom does not know she is a mother. She does not remember those years of nurturing us, guiding us, pulling her hair out because of us and ALWAYS loving us. But we remember, and today is her day.

I love you Mom and thank you for everything…

Team Alzheimer's Bio's

Mark and Megan Abrahamsen My husband, Mark, and I (Megan) are looking forward to running the CBHM for Team Alzheimers this June. The race is personal to us on several levels. First, Mark lost his grandfather, Joe Portle, to Alzheimers a few years ago. We're honored to help other families cope with the disease in this small way. Second, Megan attended business school at Dartmouth and has a special connection to the area. Finally, Mark turns FORTY two days after the race. Running 13 miles should be a great reminder that age is state of mind.

Worried It's Alzheimer's?
Eight Symptoms to Watch For

By Caring.com

Applying the word "Alzheimer's" to someone close to you can be uncomfortable, even if the signs or symptoms have been adding up for some time. It's much easier to gloss over strange behavior: "Oh, Mom's just getting older." Or to rationalize: "Well, we all forget things sometimes."

Only a qualified physician can conclude with high certainty that a living person has Alzheimer's disease. But the following eight symptoms are strongly associated with the disease. If you detect these signs in someone, it would be wise to seek a medical evaluation.

 Runners: A RUNNER'S LETTER

News

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

It is that time of year again for TeamAlzheimers. I am pleased to say that all 50 spots were taken on the first day of registration! It is now time for us to begin our training and fund raising for the Covered Bridgers Half-Marathon in June.

This run and fundraising has become so successful and we have been able to contribute to many organizations. One of our runners took it upon himself to write a letter that he will be sending out.

I want to share this letter with our readers as I feel it has so much to say…
